Remodel Day 4
Hey, is the weather these days better or what? Nice and cool in the morning, some light clouds. Warm and sunny in the afternoon. Just makes you wanna get outside and work!
Today's major remodel highlight was the truss drop. These are scissor trusses made to create an internal vaulted ceiling. Also included were a couple "normal" trusses over the dormer. It hasn't been mentioned here before, but the whole project timing was in jeopardy because the exact truss package delivery date wasn't known for sure until Wednesday afternoon. Well, that is to say truthfully, we had a date and we tried to change it and got stuck with no date. The original delivery date was Wednesday, June 28. The framer decided this was too early and I called the company to move it to Thursday. They said, "We'll try." I call back the next day and get this: "Well, Thursday was full, so now you're on a Friday overload." "What's that mean?" "Friday is booked up, but if we have time, we'll get to you Friday." "So, there's really no guarantee I'll have the trusses on Friday?" "Nope." "Okay, I'd like to change back to the original Wednesday date." "Sorry, that day is totally booked. There's no time until Friday." Such drama, eh?
I called them back every day for 5 business days. It finally paid off as my prayers, simple as they are, were answered by a phone call, "I hear you want trusses tomorrow." "That's right friend. Do you have a slot?" "Yep. 9-11am." "I'll take it!" And today it all happened.
Here's two quick videos I made of one truss lift and drop. Keep in mind that the crane is extended to about 80ft. These trusses were flying high on their way up to the housetop. I'm glad today wasn't as windy as Monday!
The construction cam got moved today when I realized that it was going to get boring real quick looking at the side of the house when all the action was on the inside. So. I pulled up the cam, built a quick rooftop platform for it to sit on (two 2x6's about 1 foot apart with a piece of OSB nailed on top) top of the neighbors roof. The view you can see now on the cam and cam grab is from there. The move was pretty quick with only 4-5 frames looking really weird as I moved the camera while it was rolling. Thanks to all the folks at work who called feeling seasick trying to watch. To you I say, "Get back to work."
The only other major milestones of the day was the building of all the interior walls, including the new bathroom and hallway, which are physically located inside the current living area of the house, and the transfer of roof load from the main roof onto a 4x12 header which spans the hall and the bathroom. The existing roof trusses had to be supported underneath, then cut from the 2x6 stud wall and top plate. The beam was put in place and the roof trusses are now hangared onto the beam on the side you cannot see.
Friday (tomorrow), we will see the trusses get rolled first thing in the morning. Then, the roof should get sheeted. At some point, the plumber will arrive to re-work the bathroom supply and waste lines, and re-route a vent stack. We might also get a visit from the mechanical contractor to punch the furnace/water heater gas exhaust through the floor and roof. No more venting into the garage. :)
