Spring Breakers

It's that time of year, when you turn on the TV and all the news programs and talk shows take time to highlight where in the world is the "hottest place to spend Spring Break." Girls Gone Wild, lots of beer and margaritas, meaningless-recreational sex, clubs so sleezy you could almost get pregnant by walking out on the dance floor, beaches where wearing less is definitely considered more. Finding a place where the youth of today can be as crazy and perverse as possible is considered the pinnacle of Spring Break greatness.

Yesterday I was sitting in a local coffee shop and I heard one of the college students say. "I can't find anyone to jam with, everyone's leaving for mission trips during Spring Break." It reminded me that our church is participating in a youth trip to Mexico for a Spring Break mission. And I thought about all the hundreds, probably thousands of youth (highschool and college) kids who will spend their Spring Break feeding the hungry, building houses, fixing churches, teaching children, praying, caring for the poor, singing worship songs, and being the hands and feet of Jesus. These kids don't make the news, they don't get a 2 minute spot on "The View."

Does anybody out there have some sort of estimate as to how many people spend Spring Break in service to the Lord? We all know our world is broken and backwards-but the truth is (despite the constant media attention focusing elsewhere) TRUE Spring Break greatness can be found in lots of dusty little towns with not a beach or a beer in sight. Amen
